Hummingbird Guided Meditation (Gabriel’s garden)
2019 – 2022

digitized Super 8 film, 54 min
*sound by Maggie Tiesenhausen*

The first of a two-part journey during one year in the life of a hummingbird as she migrates from Mexico to Canada & back again, this footage was captured entirely in the overgrown garden of G.H. in Querétaro and then digitally slowed to mimic, understand and transmit the bird’s vastly different time signature and perception. This film is an interpretation of a subjective inter-species empathic exchange with a migrating creature whose circumstances are not based on national borders but can very much be determined by them. Its 7 scenes allude to several sub-themes, including the hummingbird’s occult exploitation for the crafting of love binding spells and the sad lovers that collude in her captivity & death in exchange for romantic hope, the worker-ants she feeds on, and the worker-humans that decimate her nesting grounds with open pit mines. The visual forced perspective seeks to destabilize viewers’ sensory perception, while challenging the possibilities/limits of language and being in relation.

inkjet prints, framed with artisanal glass, 9" x 6"

Three in a unique series of pre-production stills shot in preparation for the making of Hummingbird Guided Meditation (Gabriel’s garden). These prints are one-of-a-kind and framed under hand-crafted coloured and textured glass, which further distorts and obscures the image, allowing for a highly individuated and context-specific viewing experience.
